A closer look at coal.

I’ll be traveling to eastern Kentucky this weekend to visit family and work on my personal project about coal. So many people, myself included, don’t stop to think before using electricity. Where does it come from? How is it mined? Who are the people involved? I’m no fan of mountaintop removal coal mining, but it’s a much bigger issue that needs to be documented from both sides. There are people behind every issue and, on this trip, that’s who I’m looking for. More to follow.

Conversations about photography

_B2K1760 - Version 2

I had the pleasure of attending a great panel discussion at Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art this past Friday, October 2. The discussion was titled “Beyond Beauty: Conversations About Photography” and included several photographers like Dawoud Bey (pictured above), Susan Meiselas, Eric Gottesman, Bill Burke, Tom Rankin, and Deborah Willis. Along with the discussion, was an incredible exhibit of photographs from the Archive of Documentary Arts Special Collections Library at Duke. » Continue Reading…

Experimenting with light

Details: Canon EOS 1D Mark II, 24-70mm 2.8L, f2.8 at 1/125, ISO 400, 550 EX Speedlite, home made ring flash.

I finally came around and bought a strobe a few weeks ago. I picked up a used, but well cared for, Canon 550 EX Speedlite. It works great with my existing kit and was a long overdue purchase (I also picked up an off brand wireless transmitter and receiver to be able to fire the strobe remotely). I wanted to go a step further and see if I could make a ring flash. A quick Web search yielded several versions and varieties. Another quick search reiterated my desire to make my own as they run between $199 and $399 on the low end.

It’s a hand. It’s a camera. It’s giving a hand with a camera. Help Portrait is is a movement of photographers who are using their time, equipment and expertise to give back to those who are less fortunate this holiday season. You can check out developer and photographer Jeremy Cowart’s appeal here. If you’re a photographer – professional, advanced amateur, hobbyist, or whatever – consider getting involved. It’ll be worth it. I’m on board.
