People, not pictures.

I had the good fortune of being at UNC’s PhotoNight Tuesday to listen to Dave Labelle. I met Dave a few years ago at the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar. He was sporting a University of Kentucky hat, so naturally I had to strike up a conversation. Dave’s taught photojournalism for years as well as written several books, including The Great Picture Hunt. This is a book that should be on every photographer’s shelf (I have the second edition, which he signed for me). If you’ve ever read any of his books or spent even five minutes with Mr. Labelle, he makes you want to be not just a better photojournalist, but a better human being. He shared with everyone that he’s convinced God cares about people, not pictures and encouraged us to keep that in mind as we do the work we do. Kudos to Pat Davison, Chad Stevens, and the folks at UNC for bringing him out.
