Portraits and $3 crates

I had a great weekend with the Mrs. and made a few pictures along the way. We scored some Canada Dry crates that Mrs. M has been trying to get for eons. Our favorite local bookstore, Edward McKay, often uses old Canada Dry crates flipped on their side as bookshelves. There are several locations, including our very own one in Raleigh, but this weekend we checked out the ones in Greensboro and Winston-Salem (see the complete journey below). On the way back to Raleigh on Sunday, all the planets aligned and the super nice gal at EM in Winston-Salem agreed to let us buy a couple of the crates. Three bucks each. More than a year’s worth of asking and being denied and just like that Mrs. M is the proud owner of two vintage Canada Dry crates. My only regret is that I didn’t make a picture of the gal at the counter. Note to self – do that next time. I did, however, make a portrait of Larry at the Greensboro EM the evening before. It turned out to be my favorite of the weekend.

I’m not really sure why I photograph the things I do. I mean, sometimes, it’s obvious. Other times, not so much. Feelings, sounds, smells, emotions, moods, songs, conversations, silence. All of these contribute to the how and the why. I guess that’s one of the great things about making pictures. It’s very personal. Extremely personal. It’s also very subjective. It’s been said before that I’m not the greatest communicator. I can’t argue with that at all. But there’s always something I want to communicate when I make a picture even though I can’t quite put my finger on it. I may not even know at the time what it is I’m trying to say and perhaps sometimes it’s the image that leads to the “saying”. At any rate, I’ve been pretty slack about putting myself out there, both with communicating and sharing pictures. I wish I could do a better job.
